This is an account of miraculous healing from 2nd Kings Chapter 5. It had a profound impact on me when I studied it several years ago which is why I want to share it with you now.
Enter Naaman.
Naaman was the commander of the army of Aram. He was a great man in the sight of the king and highly regarded, because through him the LORD had given victory to Aram. He was a valiant soldier, but he had leprosy.
Aramean raiders invaded Israel, took a young girl captive and gave her to Naaman’s wife as a maid. One day the girl said to her mistress, “I wish my master would go to see the prophet in Samaria. He would heal him of his leprosy.”
Naaman told the king what the young girl from Israel had said.
“Go and visit the prophet,” the king of Aram told him. “I will send a letter of introduction for you to take to the king of Israel.”
So Naaman set out carrying gifts: 750 pounds of silver, 150 pounds of gold, and ten sets of clothing. The letter to the king of Israel said: “With this letter I present my servant Naaman. I want you to heal him of his leprosy.”
When the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his clothes in dismay and said, “This man sends me a leper to heal! Am I God? That I can give life and take it away? I can see that he’s just trying to pick a fight with me.” (to start a war)
When Elisha, the man of God, heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes in dismay, he sent this message to him: “Why are you so upset? Send Naaman to me, and he will learn that there is a true prophet here in Israel.”
So Naaman went with his horses and chariots and waited at the door of Elisha’s house. But Elisha did not come out. Instead he sent a messenger out to him with this message: “Go and wash yourself seven times in the Jordan River. Then your skin will be restored, and you will be healed of your leprosy.”
But Naaman became angry. “I thought he would certainly come out to meet me!” he said. “I expected him to wave his hand over the leprosy and call on the name of the Lord his God and heal me! Aren’t the rivers of Damascus, the Abana, and the Pharpar, better than any of the rivers of Israel? Why shouldn’t I wash in them and be healed?”
Naaman turned and went away in a rage.
His officers reasoned with him and said, “Sir, if the prophet had told you to do something very difficult, wouldn’t you have done it? So you should certainly obey him when he says only to, ‘Go wash in the Jordan and be cured!’”
So Naaman went down to the Jordan River and dipped himself seven times, as Elisha the man of God had instructed. And his skin became as healthy as the skin of a young child’s, and he was healed!
Then Naaman and his entire party went back to find Elisha. They stood before him, and Naaman said, “Now I know that there is no God in all the world except in Israel. So please accept a gift from your servant.”
But Elisha replied, “As surely as the Lord lives, whom I serve, I will not accept any gifts.” And though Naaman urged him to take the gift, Elisha refused.
Let’s examine this account shall we?
Naaman went to Elisha, the prophet of God, to be healed of leprosy, and clearly he had expectations about how it was going to go down.
He was expecting to meet Elisha in person, and we can assume that he was also expecting some sort of spectacle: possibly some hand gestures, chanting, shouting, dancing, special cremes and lotions, thunder, smoke, lightning…
But Elisha didn’t even come out to meet him, and instead sent his servant to tell Naaman what to do.
Let’s put it in today’s language: Basically Naaman got dissed. And he didn’t like it.
Why?
Pride.
Naaman was Commander of the Army, second in command to the king. He was a hero, a “rockstar”. A man in his position got massive respect and anything he wanted. In this case he wanted his journey to the prophet to include 1) actually meeting the prophet, and 2) some sort of special healing ceremony.
Bathing seven times in a muddy river in enemy territory was not exactly the royal treatment.
I think most of us would have had similar reaction: Really? I came all this way bearing gifts and he won’t even come out and see me? And taking seven baths is his best advice? Really?
Nevertheless, after his officers talked some sense into him, Naman swallowed his pride; humbled himself; did it anyway; and was miraculously healed.
Human nature hasn’t changed.
Just like Naaman, we all have preconceived expectations of the way things should go.
We expect God to do things a certain way and we submit our little prayer requests to Him. Then we get mad or discouraged when He doesn’t answer or solve all our problems immediately.
This is the wrong approach.
Instead we should bring our problems to our Heavenly Father with a Thankful Heart, knowing that He cares for us we ask for His help; and choose to Believe and Trust that He will solve our problems in His own way and in His own time. That is exercising your faith.
The next step in the process is to ask Him for direction; to lead you in the way you should go. You may not like where He leads you initially, but you have to trust that He is working everything out for your good in His perfect time.
Naaman didn’t like the healing instructions he got. But he chose to humble himself and follow God’s instructions even though it probably seemed pointless.
Many times we “give” God our problems, then we pick them right back up again. We worry about them and keep trying to figure out a way to solve them on our own. If you are worrying about a problem, you haven’t completely given it to God. Every time I would start to be afraid and worry about cancer, I would prayerfully give it right back to God.
God is no respecter of persons. We are all equal in his eyes.
Our Heavenly Father demonstrates perfect love in that He loves us all equally and unconditionally. This is hard to imagine, but despite all the “good” things you’ve done in your life, God loves the thieves, rapists, and murderers just as much as He loves you. Don’t get me wrong, He hates evil, and there are consequences for sin, but nothing we do can ever change His love for us. He loves us in spite of what we’ve done.
Pride is thinking of yourself more highly than you ought. Humility is seeing yourself as God sees you, and realizing that nothing you can say, do, or possess will ever make you better than anyone else in God’s eyes. Knowing this gives you a whole new perspective on how you should treat the people you encounter each day. Pride comes naturally and humility is hard. Knowing what to do and actually doing it are two very different things. Humility is something we all have to work at constantly.
God doesn’t always do things the way we want him to.
Clearly this wasn’t the healing ceremony that Naaman expected. God often uses the people we least expect to accomplish His will. He used a lowly servant girl, a slave, to tell Naaman about Elisha. Then He used Elisha’s servant to give Naaman his healing instructions. He uses the foolish things of the world to shame the wise. He used two servants!
I believe God’s desire is always to heal, but He heals in different ways.
Sometimes it’s instantaneous, and sometimes it takes awhile, but there is usually some action or participation required on our part. As it says in James 2:26 says, “Faith without works is dead.” Works is action. Take action.
Do everything in your power to help yourself and trust God with the rest.
Everything in life happens for a reason, and most of the time the reason is you.
Many of the problems we face in life are the result of our own choices and require a change of heart or habit, or both.
God heals us the way we need to be healed, not necessarily they way we “want”.
I really wanted miraculous healing. And I prayed for it. But I know now that if God had healed me of cancer instantly I would have continued my unhealthy diet and lifestyle, burning the candle at both ends, eating junk food, not taking care of myself, and not depending fully on Him.
Instead, my healing was gradual and it taught me to rely on Him, to give Him my fear and to trust Him completely. He led me in the path of healing and it required a lot of faith and lot of action; making radical health changes and sticking with them for a long time, even now. And He has used my healing story to encourage countless others.
Naaman’s encounter with Elisha after being healed beautifully demonstrates God’s grace, mercy, and love for us.
Elisha offered healing to his undeserving enemy and refused any reward because he knew that it was a free gift from God.
And hey, if God tells you to do something, do it!
I wrote everything you just read on a Saturday morning. I saved the draft, but didn’t publish it. Then the next day this happened:
As I was walking across a parking lot to meet my wife and kids for lunch after church, a small SUV pulled in front of me and the driver waved to get my attention. When I approached the vehicle an older woman in the driver seat put her hand to her throat and began to speak. There were no teeth in her mouth and she had a tracheotomy. She had to push a button to alternate between breathing and speaking. The windows were down and in the car with her was another woman and three young girls from elementary to junior high age. I assumed it was a grandmother, a mother, and her three kids.
The grandmother spoke to me in a whisper between breaths, and with great difficulty. She told me they had been kicked out of their duplex the day before and only took what they could carry. They had spent the night in a shelter. They had no money and were hungry. She asked me if I could help them get something to eat at the McDonalds around the corner. My wife and daughters were waiting for me inside the restaurant and to be honest I didn’t really feel like helping these people. In spite of that, I said, “Yes, let’s go”.
They followed me to McDonalds’s and I went inside with the mom and the two youngest girls. One of the girls looked at me and said, “What can we get?” My heart melted. I told them, “Get anything you want, whatever you want”. And boy did they ever. That’s the most I’ve ever spent at a McDonald’s and I didn’t even eat. After I paid, the mom turned to me and said, “Thank you, God bless you.” I said, “You’re welcome. I want you to know that God has blessed me. That’s why I’m able to do this for you.”
When I walked outside I said something similar to the grandmother waiting in the car. She began to recite a poem to me. It was long and she was difficult to understand, but I caught a few lines, “…I can hear without ears…I can see without eyes…this body is only temporary…this world is not my home…” the poem was clearly about her trust and dependance on God to supply her needs. She told me she wrote the poem in 1995, and that in 2005 she was diagnosed with cancer. She said they took out her teeth so they could do radiation. I assume her tracheotomy was also a result of treatments. She said, “God delivered me from cancer”. I surprised her when I said, “He delivered me from cancer too.”
It was a sweet and powerful moment.
I drove back to the restaurant where my wife and daughters were waiting. We both teared up as I told Micah what had just happened. I was so choked up I had to stop several times to get through the story. I’m literally tearing up now as I finish this post!
What can I say, God is so good. He has changed my heart and now I’m a big softy.
Just like Naaman, I didn’t feel like obeying. It would have been easier to tell those strangers “I’m sorry, I can’t help you” or whatever, but that little act of obedience turned into a wonderful blessing for all of us that day.
I’m so thankful that God gave me the opportunity to show a family in need that He cares for them, and to make this post even more awesome!

This is an awesome post Chris. Everything about it is meaningful to me. I too was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer this year in January 2011. I have had the surgery and now decided not to do chemo. Your website has been very inspirational to me. I am sipping Pau D’Arco tea right now. What a wonderful experience indeed!I was operated last April on colon cancer, and I have decided not to undergo any chemo. At present I am taking up natural therapies in a herbal clinic here in Manila, Philippines. If His desire was to always heal we would never die. I am in no hurry to die, yet I look forward to the time I am not here because to live is Christ but to die is gain.

Pat, We die because sin has corrupted this world and our bodies. Sometimes the only healing is to be taken completely out of the suffering and corruption via death. I know I am looking forward to my new, uncorrupted and incorruptible body that will never suffer sickness. Death can be an ultimate healing, though I’m in no hurry to die either. Eileen
I understand where you are coming from Pat, but I think you are looking at this statement with “carnal” eyes. God does desire to ALWAYS heal, because there is a spiritual healing or level that He wants for ALL who will receive. We want to be physically healed so that we may live longer in earth, but God wants a spiritual healing so we may live WITH HIM for eternity which has happened to Chris more so than he probably imagined. Yes! because of his (Chris’) faithfulness and proper management of his health that God gave him, his days on earth has been extended, BUT God has healed him spiritually which will outlast the physical. I know I don’t want to die from spiritual sickness bc that may mean hell. :-)

@Pat – good point…yet I also see God heal us in our emotional pain, or works on our mental stress by teaching us His peace…or sometimes through our illness He shows others a lesson, like Chris ministering to this family. Truly, there are many ways to heal!

Wow. That’s a beautiful story and reminder about patience in the face of God and the unknown. We always want immediate results and solutions (especially myself!), but it sure doesn’t always work that way. Which is kinda’ the beauty of it, huh? Faith does not necessarily come easy. It’s not handed to us, I guess is what I’m saying. We must keep on keepin’ on through right action and surrender. I was quite moved to read this story, I recently had a cancer scare at 47 years old and your lifestyle change has inspired me to make total and radical changes in the way I eat. I am becoming a vegetarian and already am experiencing changes after 30 years of being a diabetic. I have been neglecting my body for a long time and it has started to catch up with me. I really believe that God is telling me to #1 trust in him and #2 become a committed participant. I admit I was really scared with my cancer scare, I have 4 children from 2 to 9 years old and they need their father. Jesus healed me of Stage 3 adenoma carcinoma Anal Cancer in 2008. Unlike you I had chemo Zeloda and Radiation therapy. My question is this? Now what? This is my faith problem. Why did God keep me alive for? Whats his plan for my life? Why doesn’t he answer me? Was there ever a plan?

…Get out your bible and read read read. Pray, ask him to speak to your spirit. Anything you ‘hear’ or feel that doesn’t match up with what the bible already says may not be Him speaking so be careful. So happy to hear that you have been healed! You can go forward from this worshiping and praising God for giving you more time on earth. The whole point of any of us being here is to love Him, to love one another. Let God use this hard time in your life to bring you closer and closer to Him. Trust in the words of the bible, God’s promises are true. He IS who He says He is and that can be trusted when ALL else fails.
Lean on Him, learn more about who He is and then share your story. The story God gave to you! Whether it was planned ahead or whether these things happen as a consequence of living in a fallen world, who can say for sure? Either way God can bring good out of bad. I can’t say for sure the reason you went/are going through this. But I know when I’ve had my own struggles God has always used them to show me who He is, to remind me that He needs to be my everything, to put Him first, and follow Him with everything I have, instead of putting other things first(which I have a tendency to do).
I will pray for you too! Do what you can to stay healthy, follow Christ(read your bible and do what it says and get involved with a church that does the same) and in time He will reveal Himself to you. Sometimes God only gives us a tiny sliver of a glimpse as we follow Him forward, take that step of obedience and He will continue revealing the next step. My life has been like that for quite some time and boy has it EVER taught me to totally trust in Christ. NOT easy because a lot of times we’re not forced to do that until times get really tough.
Think about Noah, how he lived on the earth for 600 years in a wicked society and never saw anyone else turn away from wickedness but he was the only one God found that trusted in Him. Someone recently pointed out to me that Noah never saw anyone convert in 600 years but he kept on following God. Think how disheartening that must have been for Noah to want others to turn away from wickedness for 600 yrs and no one did. But we don’t give up. We keep following Christ as Noah did and whether our dreams and plans feel like they are fulfilled or unfulfilled, isn’t always the point.

I just found it through pdazzler’s site, which I was directed to for the vit c emulsion directions.I’m always very glad to hear another Christian’s testimony of God’s faithfullness and plans for us, irregardless of our circumstances. I have breast cancer. I found it last year in March and never went to a doctor. Instead I prayed and studied and found the cancertutor.com site . I’ve added many alternative remedies to my protocol, and am on an almost vegan cancer diet.The results are amazing, and although I’m still testing positive with Navarro’s HCG test, it’s almost gone, along with a host of other issues. Yes you did. They asked me to buy them something to eat at McDonald’s and I gave them what they asked for.
Giving them a bag of raw vegetables would not have been appreciated.
And no I did not eat at McDonald’s.

Getting right with God is such a critical component to healing,
and unfortunately is the one thing many sick people will never do.
Mediation and other spiritual pursuits can have positive effects,
but they are superficial. They can never replace a deep intimate relationship with God.
Chris – my wife is working through stage 4 cancer the Drs. have called ‘untreatable’. It’s been 6 years, no treatment, and while it’s still in her system, any growth has been slow, and is currently considered stable. God gets the glory for this – He is her healer. She also does what she can – common sense stuff to help her immune system. She recently mentioned your site, and that it’s a great balanced place to go to get encouragement and new ideas. Thanks for all that you’re sharing with the rest of us. I personally enjoyed your writeup on Naaman’s healing and what we can learn from it. May God continue to keep you in good health, and bless you and your family!

God works in mysterious ways, I’ve read so many sites about how to beat cancer, but yours is the best, why? because you put God first.
I just recently diagnosed with Thyroid cancer, I was careful all my life because my mom had it too (15 years ago & now she is ok)
I just got married a year ago with a good career and when I heard the news, as they say, I felt cheated. With the help of my family,friends,husband and specially my UMC brothers & sisters, I realized that I needed more than physical healing…first should be spiritual healing.

This morning I sketched down some thoughts for maybe teaching or a little book, with the title ‘Lord teach me to love the way You love’. Usually we ask God to help us how to D O things, things on our little priority list. Just like the disciples asking our Lord Jesus to teach them how to pray. We so often forget that His first commandment is to love – Him, and to love Him rightly. And He is the only source of of perfect, pure love.
He showed you (and all of us who read this ), how He loves and also helped you, that day, how to love His way. This is what His love is all about, it’s a healing love, that makes things right in the end.

Chris, well written and encouraging. I have enjoyed browsing through your blog–very inspirational. I especially appreciate the “Spiritual Healing” category.
Dr. Gonzalez (a current, successful Dr. who is curing “incurable” cancers through his alternative protocol and who studied under Dr. Kelly who cured himself of stage IV pancreatic cancer) believes: Cancer and most chronic disease are a third physical, a third mental, and a third spiritual. I agree.
True healing, physically manifested, occurs within mind, body, and soul when harmony is obtained. As Eileen mentioned, sometimes this is achieved, once we (believers) have crossed over and are in the arms of our dear Saviour. However, when ill, Christ commands us in the New Testament to pray and to be anointed with oils. Oils– essential and olive, were commonly used in Biblical days, two–myrrh and frankincense even gifted to baby Christ. It is interesting to note that of our 5 senses, the sense of smell travels directly to the emotional cortex of the brain, the Limbic system. Hence therapeutic e.os. aid in emotional release of negative feelings that left to stagnate can lead to disease on all levels–mentally and spiritually manifesting physically in the form of cancer or other chronic ailments.
But I digress.
There’s one point you make, that I would like to challenge. That being the seemingly inferior “muddy Jordan river” used as the place of treatment (which Namaan initially thought,too).
According to wiki, “In the Hebrew Bible the Jordan is referred to as the source of fertility to a large plain (“Kikkar ha-Yarden”), and it is said to be like “the garden of God” (Genesis 13:10).”
It also feeds into the Dead Sea, (renowned for health benefits from the extraordinarily high mineral content), and is where, not only John the Baptist, but the Living Water himself, Jesus, was baptized.
Many peoples of the Bible used ashes (common element, carbon, one of the best absorbers of toxic chemicals, heavy metals, venom, etc.) during purification rituals to cleanse themselves, physically, spiritually and emotionally, (reference Job, treating his boils).
So, too, I believe the Jordan River offered specific, mineral-rich, healing qualities that when performed 7 times–God’s # of fulfillment/perfection (also same # of energy chakras in the human body) caused healing of not only the physical manifestation of leprosy, but the necessary corresponding healing of the mind and spirit.
God doesn’t use “quackery” to heal, as most people think alternative treatments are. And sometimes, He authorizes conventional medicine, especially surgery, to help heal. But, as the Great Physician, I believe God has provided in His creation and will continue to provide for all of our health needs–mind, body, soul, & emotion if we accept. As you mentioned, often our pride can interfere in the healing process. Also, many people place undue trust in pharmacology (derived from greek word pharmakon: defined as poison–how’s that for quakery?) for healing, rather than the abundant natural means–clays, salts, herbs, oils, berries, gemstones, spring water, etc. He has provided for us on this earth and will most likely provide in the new one to come. That’s the exciting part for believers. There will not be death in heaven, but there will be continued healing (of the nations from the leaves of the trees planted by the banks of the river running through the new Jerusalem).

I’m not a religious person at all, mostly because I have seen the church using the same morals as the chemo doctors! However I do listen to jesus’s words, I just interpret his words differently.
Does it not make sense to anyone else that Jesus is just a humble human being, with a realisation and is teaching us to look inside yourself?. In other words he is saying god is your essence, conciousness, he is intwined with who you are. He is not out side of you. When you take away thinking from humans, he is what is left. ‘He’ or maybe she, or maybe neither, is the intelligence that runs your organism. This intelligence would tell you to eat healthy to cure cancer, and the not always so smart human mind would think itself to fear and believe what it is told and do the chemo!
Anyway, much respect Chris and all those brave souls who make this world a hopeful, positive and beautiful place to live.

I was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer Feb 1, 2012 and I too had surgery to remove a tumor the size of a golf ball. I also had to have a full blown hysterectomy because the cancer spread to my female parts. WIth that being said, I DO believe things happen for a reason. I felt myself turning into a really mean person prior to this happening. WHen this happened, I picked up the phone and made peace with the people I needed to apologize to. I was on the verge of divorce and now our marriage is better than ever. We have a very healthy 5 year old and he keeps me living. Thank you so much for the positivty. I used positivity, spirituality, and my will to get through this. Although I did use chemo, I am now cancer free 10 months and I am on a mission to eat better and take so much more better care than before. Thank you again.

I was truly blessed reading your message. My doctor/oncologist has told me that if I go the natural way, I would eventually end up right back to her because I refused to do surgery and chemo after being diagnosed with Invasive lobular carcinoma in January of this year. I was truly hurt when she said that to me and it felt as ifbtherevreally was no hope for me. There was only one thing I wanted to do and that was to get better and show her that she is not God and that the gift of life or death was not hers to give to anyone. I turned to God for guidance and like you discovered “God’s Way To Ultimate Health” I know that I have to completely surrender to His will for my healing to take place. I continue to pray and ask God to increase my faith and forgive me for my weak moments of fear and unbelief. Please pray for me to have that closer walk with God. Continue to inspire others. I’m 18 years old and my dad was diagnosed with cancer 1 month ago. all though he is going ahead with surgery, chemo and radiation I will make sure he reads this.
my dad has not been the most spiritual person but ever since he was diagnosed he turned to God.
He asked loved ones to pray for him and I know he prays everyday.
This isn’t something he would usually do but I too believe everything happens for a reason. God has given him this obstacle to remind my dad that God is here and to never forget that.
this has made me view my dad in a even more beautiful way.
I pray everyday for my dad, sometimes I get scared but I just begin to pray again. I know God is always here for us and that he and all above are looking over my dad and healing him every step of the way.
Our Lord will heal my dad in a way that we don’t know so we shall continue to pray and be patient because the Lord above will answer our prays and with that I believe and trust that the Lord and Jesus Christ and our angles above will cure my dad and help him defeat this cancer.

I worked on a leprosy control project several years ago in the middle of the rainforest in Amazonas, Brazil.
