The Amazing Health Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar

Since my last post was on alkalizing, and thanks to a facebook thread with Deanna and Kathy,
I figured I’d continue with that theme and write about one of my favorite products on planet earth,
which was also a staple in my anti-cancer diet:  Apple Cider Vinegar.

Apple Cider Vinegar is exactly what it sounds like:  Vinegar from fermented apple juice.

If you’ve never had it, it tastes like vinegar but with an appley twist, and is celebrated in the natural health world as a “cure-all” internal cleanser.

It’s rich in enzymes and potassium, which your body uses to regenerate soft tissue, and it’s an alkalizer.

Clinical studies have shown:

-It’s good for diabetes as it lowers blood glucose levels

-It lowers cholesterol

-It lowers blood pressure and promotes heart health

Studies have also shown it may be able to kill cancer cells or slow their growth.  Nice!

Apple Cider Vinegar is also reported to assist in curing allergies, sinus infections, acne, flu, chronic fatigue,
candida, acid reflux, sore throats, contact dermatitis, arthritis, and gout.

According to Bragg Health Products it also:

Helps Remove Body Toxins * Helps Promote a Youthful Body *Helps support a healthy immune system
* Helps Maintain Healthy Skin * Helps Control Weight * Improves Digestion and Assimilation
* Soothes Tight and Aching Joints and Sore Muscles from exercise * Soothes irritated skin.

Whether all those claims are true, I don’t know.  All I know for sure is, I love it.

And I never liked vinegar until I tried Apple Cider Vinegar about 12 years ago.  Now I’m a fiend for it.
(Full disclosure: my wife can’t stand the stuff)

The most popular way to take it is to mix a teaspoon of ACV with a teaspoon of raw honey in a glass of filtered water.
Even if you don’t like vinegar, that makes it super easy to drink; kinda like diluted apple juice.  It’s a great way to start the morning and they even bottle it and sell it diluted with honey as a beverage.

I took the picture on the right when I saw some recently in Fresh Market.

I also mix ACV with olive oil and spices in a salad dressing I make from scratch, and I often just swig it straight out of the bottle for a little kick.  Of course it’s a great healthy substitute for any recipe that calls for vinegar, just prepare for a slightly different flavored dish.

If you can’t tell, my absolute favorite brand is Bragg Organic Apple Cider Vinegar.  It’s raw and unfiltered, leaving all the vital nutrients and enzymes intact; unlike most vinegars which are pasteurized, filtered, processed, and nutritionally “dead”.

Paul Bragg was a lifelong health crusader and mentor to Jack Lalane.  He wrote a book on Apple Cider Vinegar and numerous other books on diet, exercise, fasting, etc; and is just basically awesome.  I have most of his books in my library.
You can find 16oz bottles of Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar at most grocery stores, or you can get a big ol’ 1 gallon jug HERE.

Bragg also makes some other delicious products we love: Liquid Aminos and Organic Sprinkle Seasoning.

Cheers!

with honey..sounds interesting. I have to give that a try. I used to drink it for a while freshman year of college, but grew an aversion towards it after a while. It was so strong! that was because I drank it as is!

    1. chrisbeatcancer

Cool. Yeah that’ll make a big difference. But you gotta admit, nothing makes you feel alive like chuggin ACV straight out of the bottle! :)

      1. Charlotte Mackey

Chugging ACV straight is not a good idea — does horrible things to the throat/esophagus/glottal area of the neck AND stomach lining in the long run. ACV is best mixed with oil & herbs for a salad or diluted in a large glass of water. Also, 2-3 tablespoons is way to much. In a sitting, 1-3 teaspoons is more appropriate. Just because it is considered a natural remedy does not mean you should overdo.” Burning your throat going down”, indicates what this acid is doing as it heads toward the stomach where the body must converts it into an alkaline solution. Over-consumption harms your stomach and throat . Many people combat this by adding a pinch of baking soda to neutralize the ACV’s acidity.

    Hi Chris,
I love ACV too but i don’t drink it b/c it’s bad for your teeth. I read that it makes your teeth sensitive, which is a big problem for me. How do you avoid this problem?

    1. chrisbeatcancer

      Hi Katerina
I’ve been drinking it and putting it on my salads for years and it’s never bothered my teeth.
My only advice would be to try to dilute it more, like maybe 1 teaspoon per 8 ounces of water.

    2. Charlotte Mackey

Only drink ACV diluted with water or juice and use a straw to protect your teeth.. It can erode teeth AND burn off the lining of the throat (esophagus -larynx- glottiss) and a weak stomach. Add a pinch of baking soda to your glass or gargle afterward with BS and water. Don’t let it sit! If you eat ACV on your salad, have water available at the meal to swish occasionally as you eat. To get rid of those sensitive teeth, take a wad of ROMAINE lettuce and chew it like gum for abut 5-15 minutes to re-mineralize your teeth (From David Wolf’s book.). This, much to my surprise, actually works! Something else that works on teeth sensitivity, pain, and gum health is “Oil-Pulling.” Check it out!..

  3. Kiko

Some say, Drink it with a STRAW w/o touching teeth especially if you just swig it straight out of the bottle for a little kick.

  4. Earl

Chris. I’ve been using ACV for six years, everyday, since it cured my pneumonia back in 2005. Man, do I have stories. I’ve not a had cold in 6 six years, not that a few bugs have not tried to tackle me, but every time I feel a cold coming on, I take a little ACV and, voila, the bug is gone. My teeth are fine. My finger nails grow like crazy. One of my contractors was a type II diabetic and lowered is blood sugar 35 points in 4 weeks. Good to find your blog. Glad to hear you beat your cancer. EA

    Chris,
Found your blog yesterday. Been devouring it like a kid in a candy store since last night.
Thanks for taking the time to write this.

Question for you: Have you ever tried Coconut sap vinegar? It looks like it could be 100 times as potent as ACV. Check this out. http://www.coconutsecret.com/coconut-apple%20chart.html

    Best,
    Atticus.

    1. chrisbeatcancer

I haven’t, but thanks for the tip!
Very interesting. Will check it out!
      :)

        Hi Chris,
I’m really confused…trying to advise a friend who has stage 3 colon cancer and is in a state of panic. I’m researching everywhere to find out what he can have, and as there are secondary growths, I’ve seen that all sugar is bad because it feeds the tumours. But so many people say honey is good, and I want to tell him about cider vinegar but without honey I think it would be unpalatable….Any advice to offer?

        Thanks for your website!

        1. chrisbeatcancer

Apple cider vinegar is definitely palatable.
I drink it straight from the bottle but you can also mix in 1-2 tsp in a glass of filtered water. Very easy to drink

        2. Mary

Alicia, I brew some hot water and add 1 to 2 teaspoons of ACV in a cup and drink it like a tea. it is really very good

        3. Sally

I would look into bentonite clay. Living clay to be specific but I like Sonne’s too. I drink it and use it as an enema and as a poultice on my coblon area. I’ve used it in the past topically to get rid of what looked like.basal cell carcinoma on my arm. Just left it on all day. Also. I’ve used 12% food grade hydrogen peroxide applied on my chest on what looked like melanoma. Very dark red skin lesions, small ones. I Applied it with a toothpick, since the stuff burns,i wanted to only get it on where needed. It hurt for about a half hour. It’s gone now too. Hope this helps someone. Xoxo

  6. Tessy

Hi Chris, great work you are doing.God bless you abundantly. I have never used apple cider vinegar, but recently purchased one because I learnt it helps with ovarian cysts. However, on getting home, I found out it contained sulphur dioxide as preservative and had to discard it. I am also fighting chronic myeloid leukemia and on Glivec, would appreciate any advice to help me go off this medication. Thanks

    1. Sally

You may want to look into a viral cause for leukemia and try l-lysine or treat it like candida(fungal) and try baking soda and anti-fungal drugs prescribed by your doctor. Charcoal caps purify the body also. Molasses (blackstrap) is loaded with good for you minerals also chia seeds.

  7. Sharon Azar

My condition of acid reflux was worsening so I tried the ACV and within one day the burning acidy feeling disappeared. I think the ACV also wiped out some intestinal bacteria. Also, it’s delicous! I just wish there was a way ACV could be given to dogs. My friends dog has cancer.. maybe if ACV could be made into a capsule??

    1. chrisbeatcancer

      Awesome Sharon!
I would try putting a couple teaspoons into the dogs water everyday.

    2. cristina

acv can be given to dogs. Just in a different amount. Google it.

    3. Lauren Smith

I recently started giving my cat ACV mixed with purified water in a dropper. He takes it fine. He had an incident, less than a week ago, when his back legs went out. I don’t know it was a stroke, heart attack / swelling, sepsis blood infection causing all the above, bone cancer or tumor….but I used DMSO with a q-tip on his spine (reduces inflammation and excellerates healing), gave him ACV, seasalt and folic acid. Within 2 days he was mobile and climbed to the top of his 3-tier cat perch! I am going to continue giving him ACV and seasalt mixed in water. His recovery was absolutely amazing.

  8. Maria

    Hi Chris,

I have breast cancer, and I monitor my PH level daily. I an not able to get my levels to go up or be consistent with diet alone. I have been drinking baking soda water. I would like to try the Apple Cider Vinegar, but if there is nothing wrong with Baking Soda, I will keep using that. I have been told by another experienced person not to use it.

  9. Jill

A friend at work told me about ACV for swelling hands and such. The next morning I could already tell a difference. She also mentioned it was good for joint pain but may take a while to notice that. I have been drinking 2 t. two to three times a day. It has helped in aiding weight loss already. We have an orchard close by that sells full strength ACV. I rather enjoy the taste in 8 oz. of water. I’m going to get some local honey and try that along with it just for a change of pace. I was so glad to read all of the comments on here. I was worried about the acid and my teeth so I do drink it from a straw.
    Thank you!!!!!!!!
    JW

    1. Charlotte Mackey

Yes, ACV is great for arthritic swelling, pain, and stiffness. I have awakened with joint stiffness; as soon as I down less than a tablespoon of ACV in a 6-8 oz glass of water with a light pinch of Baking Soda, the stiffness is gone in about 15-20 minutes. My daughter swears by it for her occasional carpal tunnel flare-ups.

  10. Christian

I had severe seborrheic dermatitis on my face and head. There is no known cure for this and it go so bad that I almost didn’t want to leave the house. I was that way for years. I started putting ACV (with mother) on my face a couple of times a day with a cotton ball, and the seborrheic dermatitis started disappearing within a week. It’s been four years now and although I still need to apply it every day, you can’t even tell I have it anymore. Pretty awesome.

    1. joe

That’s nice I also tried the acv and it helped only for a while

which brand of soap do you use?
      Am and pm wash?
      thanks

  11. Victoria Yee

    Chris, thanks for sharing this!
I heard from my sister that her friend’s grandpa at 80+ was diagnosed with colon cancer final stage. Doctor predicted 3 months and it’s game over for him. Since he is too old for chemo and stuff, his family decided on alternatives. He started drinking apple cider vinegar and honey every morning and organic food all the way. A month later, he followed up with the doctor. From stage 4, he is in stage 2 after a month. Doctor is naturally surprised with the results!

Hopefully, everyone (even the healthy ones) starts to drink this too… :)

  12. pam marshall

How about ACV pills? do they work? cant stand the taste.

  13. Laurie in Gaston, Oregon

Just happened to stumble on your website by accident. I make raw apple cider every year (from our small orchard) and freeze it. I was Googling to see what health benefits there might be from drinking it and came upon your website. You are a very generous young man to share all of your research and health habits with the world. Thank you so much and keep up the great work! I look forward to following your blog.

  14. glen

I use it to control cancer of the gastro tract. It does not cure cancer but it keeps it in check. Dont use baking soda. Too much sodium.

  15. Mrinalini Sarraf

Wonderful blog! I found it while searching on Yahoo News.

Do you have any tips on how to get listed in Yahoo News?
I’ve been trying for a while but I never seem to get there! Thank you

    1. Chris Wark

I didn’t even know I showed up in yahoo news… so no tips. Sorry!

  16. charlie klem

I was wondering about a study that claims ACV can cause bladder cancer, I have had bladder cancer stage 0 for about 12 years now. I would like to continue using ACV for other possible benefits, but now after reading a vague warning about this study (which I can’t seem to find) I am strongly considering stopping the ACV. I will bring it up with my Urologist in the near future.Does anyone know more on this?

  17. Dee

Hi Chris! You have a great site here, keep up the good work! I have stage 4 ovarian cancer & any help would be greatly appreciated. I’m currently doing chemo but not sure about the process if it will work or not. I have read about acv working for cancer but not sure how to go about it. Thanks!

  18. Albert

I bought a bottle of Braggs apple cider vinegar after suffering from gout. This stuff really works, I have been gout free for two years now, as for the teeth I diluted and down it fast.

  19. Bj Ross

I’ve noticed that ACV almost immediately corrects my blurred vision. I also can feel the. immediate effects as a tonic for my body. amazing what God’s food can do for us. Thank you for your site I very much enjoy it!

  20. clarita

I can’t understand exactly what’s the problem with the taste of ACV DILUTED in a tall glass of water .-
with all the BENEFITS you get, simply DRINK IT.
Many find this taste refreshing and enjoyable.

  21. Helen

I have this incase my Fibromyalgia kicks in, i put it in my bath, it helps the bruised feeling. xx

  22. Becky

I LOVE Bragg’s ACV too, Chris! I drink it mixed with water, love the taste, but will try with raw honey soon. I’m getting my stomach back in shape since taking generic Prilosec (omeprazole) for a while. Searching online, I found your site here—love what all you have and continue to share about your journey to health beating the Big C.

So it’s not harmful if you take two teaspoons daily without water.

  25. muscacist1

I also take acv because its good for blood glucose and I am a type 2 diabetic and it lowers my glucose as much as 100mg/dl or more with exercise after meals. But i also heard the acetic acid of all vinegars can be toxic to the blood and even cause leukemia. I dont know if this is true or not.

  26. Darlene

Chris, I’m trying to find if Braggs Liquid Aminos is something a breast cancer patient should avoid. Not having any leads. Do you know?

  27. DrTCH

Hold on. How could apple cider vinegar POSSIBLY be an alkalinizer, when it is highly acidic?
