How I got on The Ricki Lake Show

So here’s the backstory of how I ended up on The Ricki Lake Show.
Getting there was a bit of a fiasco and I learned three important lessons as a result.

If you don’t want to know the backstory, just scroll all the way down to the videos.

On Wednesday February 13th, 2013 I got an email through the site from a casting guy at The Ricki Lake Show. He said they were looking for someone who used juicing to beat cancer and that he found my site with a google search, watched some of my videos, and wanted to talk with me about coming on the show the following Tuesday.

I replied to his email and then left him a voicemail. I didn’t want to leave anything to chance.
He called me back a few hours later and explained that they would fly me to LA the day before the show and put me up in a hotel that night, and I would fly home after the taping.

Interview opportunities like this can be a little bit dangerous. Depending on their agenda, a producer can make you look like the greatest guy in the world, or a like total idiot. I was fully aware of this possibility, but was willing to take the risk, so I said yes. Also there was no compensation involved.

On Friday we had a phone interview. It was supposed to only take 15-20 minutes, but we ended up talking for 45 minutes. He had a lot of questions and admitted afterward that he was fascinated by what I had to say. Our conversation gave me the impression that their intention was to portray my story in a positive light, but I was still thinking it could be a set up. He also took down my shirt, pant and shoe size. So I assumed they would be outfitting me in wardrobe.

On Saturday night I received an email with flight details. As I looked over the itinerary I noticed they had booked a flight from Memphis to LA with a connection in Charlotte.
For the geographically challenged, LA is about a five hour direct flight due west from Memphis, but Charlotte is a two hour flight east from Memphis, which meant I would spend an extra FOUR HOURS on a plane each way. This was the worst connection I’d ever seen. Imagine traveling two hours in the wrong direction then two hours back to where you started, then four more hours to where you’re going. Plus the flight home was a red eye, that’s about an eight hour overnight flight plus a layover. I’m ok with flying, but all things being equal, I’d rather not spend an extra 8 hours on a plane in a 36 hour period if at all possible. I was really dreading this big time.

Lesson #1 Always ask for a direct flight.

I called the casting guy, explained the situation, and asked as nicely as I could if there was any way it could be changed. I had already identified a few other preferable flights, which I referenced in our conversation. He said he would see what he could do.

The next day, Sunday, he sent me an email stating that my flight was being changed and they would be sending the new flight info shortly. Great! Big relief.

But by bedtime Sunday night I still had not received the new flight details. I was set to fly out the next day and I was starting to get a little nervous…

The next morning I got up at 6am and checked my email, still nothing. I was worried, but it was 4 am in LA so I couldn’t call anyone. I got ready, had breakfast, packed my bag, and did some office work, hoping to hear something soon.

At 7:45 am I got an email, they got me a direct flight from Memphis to LA…

Yes!

Leaving in 40 minutes at 8:25 am.

Oh no!

There was no way I could make the flight. Things were not going my way.

I called the casting guy back and told him the new problem. I was really starting to feel like a chump for even asking him to change the flight in the first place. But he wasn’t in charge of booking the flight and was just as frustrated as I was that they waited so long to send me the new flight info. I called the airline and found another flight leaving at 1pm with connection in Salt Lake, and I could transfer my ticket for $50 bucks… I’ll take it!

The rest of the trip went smoothly and I even got a nice pre-flight mini-massage from a TSA official when I opted out of the full body scan.

When I arrived at LAX a driver was waiting for me with a sign with my name on it. Nice.
He walked me to a black Cadillac Escalade and drove me to a swanky “old hollywood” hotel called The Culver Hotel.

Culver hotel card

Told you it was swanky.

As soon as I got into my room I checked my email. There was a new message from the show detailing the clothes I was supposed to bring. “Please bring three changes of clothes, business casual attire”.

Ok. Hmm. I didn’t even bring one business causal outfit, let alone three. So I called the casting guy again.

Have you ever had someone in your life who constantly calls you with their problems?
I had become that guy. I was like, “Hey man, so I just got this email about what clothes to bring. They didn’t send it until today. And I don’t have anything to wear.” He came by the hotel to meet me in person and see what clothes I had (a nice pair of jeans and a plaid button up shirt). He said, “This might work. If not, don’t worry about it, we’ll figure something out in wardrobe.”

That made me feel a little better, but I was still concerned. I checked google maps for a Gap,
J Crew, Banana Republic, anything close by… No dice. I went downstairs to get something to eat and asked the guy at the front desk if he knew of anywhere I could buy some clothes. He said, “There’s a Ross a few blocks down the street.” Minutes later I was schlepping it down the street in LA to Ross in search of business casual.

Ross was a total bust. Everything in the mens department was “urban street wear”. Not the look I needed… Ok God, it’s in your hands. You got me here. I’m sure you can find me something to wear.

Lesson #2  Always bring three changes of clothes to wear on television.
Also don’t wear white, or stripes, or plaid. They look weird on camera.

The morning of the show I walked across the street and had breakfast at an amazing restaurant called… I forget. And I don’t feel like digging up the receipt. It definitely wasn’t a Denny’s.

Here’s what I ate: local organic farm-raised eggs scrambled with some spinach, red pepper, mushrooms, a side salad and iced green tea. It was perfect.

After breakfast the casting agent met me and two other guests (Jenifer Schuerman and her mom) in the lobby of the hotel and we all hopped on a golf cart and whizzed through the Culver Studios lot to the Ricki Lake set.

Everyone working on the show was super nice. Every time I turned around someone was telling me how much they loved my story and how excited they were to have me on.
Maybe they say that to all the guests… but either way, it felt good and was a definite confidence booster.

My dressing room even had a little sign with my name on it.
I posted this pic on facebook and a bunch of people were like, “No way! When!” etc.

Chris Wark Ricki Lake

Here’s the dressing room. I spent most of my time pacing back and forth, thinking about what I wanted to say. Also pictured: my green tea from breakfast.

Ricki Lake Show Dressing room

A girl from wardrobe stopped by with two paris of pants, two shirts, two sweaters and some dress shoes. After some deliberating we both agreed on the best combo. And before I knew it someone was knocking on the door saying, “Ok it’s time”.

I took this next pic as I was standing backstage waiting to go on. I was trying not to think about how many people were going to see the show and focused on treating it like I was just speaking to a small group. It wasn’t working.

Before Ricki brought me out, she showed the audience a short video clip of my story. When the clip finished there was huge applause. A producer turned to me and said, “They never do that. They never clap after a video clip.”  That got me pretty jazzed.

Ricki Lake Show backstage

As soon as the applause died down Ricki called me out. I walked out to more applause, feeling a bit like a celebrity, and praying I didn’t trip on something. When I sat down on the couch with Ricki she said, “Did you ever think you’d be sitting here ten years later after this kind of diagnosis?” She had tears in her eyes, which got me all emotional too!
I almost lost it right there and had to look down to regain my composure. I made a little joke to lighten the mood, but I have to say it was really tough to keep it together in the beginning. The more I talked the more comfortable and relaxed I got. Everything was clicking and I really got on a roll. Ricki is such a pro and a really sweet person. She made it so easy.

During the commercial break I whipped out my phone and took a picture of the audience from the couch.

Lesson #3 Know exactly what you want to say. Don’t ramble.

Thankfully I got some incredible advice from my friend Rhonda Price. She explained that with national TV appearances like this you usually only get a couple minutes to talk. So you have to distill your story and message down to the most important points, which I did. But at the same time I still had no idea what to expect. I thought best case I would get a full segment (about 4-5 minutes) to tell my story, and worst case I would be on stage with several other people and only get to answer a couple questions. But to my surprise they had me on for two full segments, and then they brought me back up for audience Q&A at the end!
It went better than I could have imagined.

Thank you to Ricki, Jarrett, and everyone on The Ricki Lake show for being so awesome.

Here are the clips…

Enjoy!

Your story is remarkable!! I DVR Ricki Lake daily and watch it on the weekends. As soon as I heard your story, I looked up your website and I posted it on my Aunts Facebook page. I said “Get eating your raw vegetables!!” and posted your website link.

You are so inspirational and funny! Thanks for making my day better!

    2. Martha

Awesome Chris! Thank you for getting the word out about alternative cancer treatments, it always inspires me & you explain things so simply. My husband has a very similar story to yours. He was diagnosed with colon cancer stage 4 almost 2 yrs ago & had a orange size tumor removed along with a big part of his intestines & quite a few lymph nodes. The oncologist of course recommended 6 months of chemo & radiation but after much prayer & research he was pretty convinced that poisoning his body would weaken him more so we opted for the Gerson therapy. He’s been cancer free for over 18 months now & recovering really well. I asked him to write you, so you’ll probably heard from him one of these days. God bless you!

Chris, bravo! It’s like you were a major league baseball player and you hit 10 home runs in a row.

Your responses and the positive energy you exuded really knocked it out of the park.

    You’re a great spokesman.

I just wanted to let you know that I am so glad to see that you are still allowing God to lead you. Please don’t ever let all this attention change you. You are doing a remarkable work for His kingdom & really enjoy keeping up with all the articles & products out there for natural healing. Sounds like perhaps God is leading you to write a book??? I think it would be great if you let the world know Who did the healing!! Glad you listened – what a platform God has given you!

  14. Terry

God bless you for having the NERVE to stand up to the doctors. My mom did not have the guts to stand up to the bandits, and believed all the nonsense about chemo.

I’m surprised you did not mention Iodoral, and ATP since they are critical to keeping cancer at bay.

  15. Rosalie Francetich

What a wonderful opportunity, and you did such a great job presenting your story in a God-honoring way. I am rejoicing with you in this.

  16. Mike D.

    Hi Chris,
This is My story; Last year my mom was diagnosed with cancer, She had stage 4 cancer.
Cancer leisures in her brain, and Long cancer.
It took 10 months for the cancer to kill her Which had spread all over her body; She died on the 6th Of November 2012; Two and half months later on the 23 Of January 2013 (23 days after my birthday) I fell on the ice at work and broke four ribs, Went to the emergency by ambulance, Once I got to the hospital I lost conscience and walk up in a bed; The doctors thought I was bleeding internally since my four ribs were broken. I went through all the scans, MRI, Echo, And all the other tests that you can think of.
I received my results Only On the 18th Of March 2013.
They found a 5 cm tumor in my liver, So obviously the put me through a colonoscopy and found cancer tumor there also.
I’m diagnosed with stage 4 cancer just as my mom did. I’m not willing to die, not yet!
Here in Montréal Canada Our Medicare is free, So it is a lot easier than the US, Thank God for That!! But obviously as you can see they’re taking all the time in the world (Results/operation…)
Since I found that I have cancer I bought the book of “Kris Carr” And became a complete vegan.
I have been juicing for a month now. I don’t mind eating the same thing every single day, on the contrary, I actually love it.
I drink Between 30 to 40 ounces of juice on a daily basis, and I also eat it raw.
Including the protein shakes And all the vitamins I need, B12, B12 complex, Probiotics, Vitamin D3, Omega 3 and 6,
This is very new to me (My habit of eating); I have zero knowledge But I know I’m going to win the fight.
My PET scan is scheduled for the 25th Of April. On the 29th I was scheduled for my first chemotherapy Which I postponed For now, and In June or July I’m scheduled for two operations, My Colon And my liver.
Everywhere I read or hear I’m bombarded with different knowledge and different experiences; “Take this, use that, Go for chemotherapy, Eat this don’t eat that” and all the rest of the BS I’m sure you got yourself.
I’m 45 years old born and raised in Israel, moved to Canada at the age of 14 years old. I am Jewish and I truly believe in God.
I drive trucks for a living, not just any truck driver I do the supersize super length and superheavy (Just like you see on TV).
My primary hobby is to build motorcycles.
I would like to thank you For the courage You are giving me; I don’t want to die I’m still too young for that.
So here I am Using your method, And with all the will and the power I know one day I will say “My MRI results Say I kicked cancers ass”

    Mike D.

If ever you have any suggestions for me I would highly appreciate it.
If you don’t mind can you please read the message I sent you on Facebook.

    1. Antionette Sawyer

Hi Mike,I like you have watched family members suffer and die from cancer and like you I was then diagnosed with advanced breast cancer.Do not be afraid you are doing the the right thing! I have just had a scan result only five months after been diagnosed and it is shrinking and vastly improved. You can do it too! I have done everything I could afford and physically manage.Keep up the diet,if you haven’t already then start exercise, building muscle is really important. epsom salt baths, body brushing, rebounding, infrared saunas, coffee enemas, magnetic clay, zapper, bone broths, E-books by Doctor Kingsley from amazon, deep breathing exercises, essiac, apricot kernels, your faith is so important. I pray you can carry on your journey back to health.
      Antoinette x

      1. Antionette Sawyer

Forgot to say ,thankyou so much Chris for this site and your efforts to help others ,getting on Riki is amazing,I wonder how many as a result of that are now on the road to recovery! I just got amazing scan results that show my breast cancer is shrinking and its thanks to this site that gave me the confidence to go it alone!
        keep up the good work,Antoinette

        1. Chris Wark

That’s amazing Antoinette!!! Keep me posted ok?

      2. Chris Wark

        I SECOND ALL OF THAT!!!

    2. Mike Perry

Mike, I read your post/reply and wanted to encourage you to seek input/feedback from others who believe in Chris.. I have integrated his knowledge into my diet and made some significant changes in my mindset.
The thought of seeking advice from conventional medicine is very limited; as most protocols revolve around cut, burn and poison you. I have been cut and burned and that was it. I am now cancer free and because I kept and open mind, sought out objective knowledge (and applied it), I believe I am truly on the road to recovery. Should you read this, please post your Facebook name and city and I will PM you..

      God Bless,

      Mike in Nevada

  17. Gretchen

Your Ricki Lake appearance was great! Thanks Chris

  18. Healingthyme

*Applaud..applaud* Well done Chris! I love your continued enthusiasm to help people and share your story!.
I tell everyone about your site — it covers so much of what you did/do and what others do to beat cancer, and I love that.
    Continued good health to you.
    Peace.

  19. Terri da Silva

I too am someone who is beating cancer using holistic methods instead of the standard chemo, slash, & burn practices. I was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer in 2011 and am now in remission with no evidence of disease! This message is so important. I was thrilled that Ricki Lake gave you the chance to share it with millions. Thank you for sharing your story and providing such a great website full of healing information. You rock!!
    – Terri (my own blog is: http://www.gracefulwomanwarrior.com)

    1. Chris Wark

      Go Terri! That’s awesome!!!

    2. Graham

Are you disease free? I didn’t get that impression from your blog.

  20. Farrah Dearlove

Awesome!!!!!! 1st of many interviews I would say :)

    1. Chris Wark

Thank you Farrah that’s so sweet. :)

  21. Sheila Schiffman

Dear Ricki, Thank you so much for having Chris on your show to inform people that there are alternatives to Chemo and Radiation. It is my mission I’m trying to get across to everyone I come in contact with. Conventional medicine is not to heal it is to make the Big Pharma’s wealthy. Healing is not about money it is about being caring of ones health to see to it they have a chance at optimal health. Hippocrates stated ” Let Food Be Thy Medicine and Medicine be they food. I heard it stated to take aspirin to thin ones blood, wrong. Take vitamin E Aspirin is not healthy and can cause more problems. I’m so happy for you Chris and God Bless you with continued health and happiness. We all need to take a lesson from this young man. Eat healthy to live healthy it is the only way. God created this abundance of organic food for all of us.

  22. Bridget Ilardo Williams

So awesome Chris!!! So many parallels to my hubbys story. This is the age of information, no one can stop the news about natural cancer cures from getting out any more :)

  23. Casey

I love this. I am so impressed with Ricki Lake for having alternative methods on her show. And, thank you for sharing your story and writing this blog. I share your blog with my community and my clients. I love what you said (something like this), “Why would I poison myself to health?” Such a good question.

I’m not a foodie, either, and I always talk about keeping it SIMPLE.

    With appreciation,
    Casey

  24. Sue C

You were great on the show! I watched it all – so happy you are doing well!!

  25. Carolyn Murphy

So happy for you Chris. I kept up with you through Selena H.and her parents at the beginning of your diagnosis and through the years. I’m really happy that this has worked so well for you and your family.

  26. Tricia

I was so excited when I heard you were going to be on the show. I set my DVR and rushed home to watch it. You did an excellent job telling your story. My mom passed away from pancreatic cancer in September. I’ve been obsessed reading and researching about preventing/treating cancer ever since. I’m sad I didn’t know more when my mom was diagnosed. It is so overwhelming. I loved your story. It gives hope and it just makes more sense on how to treat cancer.
I loved the whole clothes story. Believe it or not when you first came out on the set I noticed your outfit and thought to myself that you looked so nice!! Congrats on a job well done!

  27. Joanne

So thrilled the message is getting out , you did an awesome job Chris. Fortunately I don’t have cancer but have been overweight most of my life and have started on my health journey “again” but with a different attitude. My friend has been diagnosed with breast cancer and had a lumpectomy but chose not to go thru with the usual treatment, I am happy to say she is fighting fit and really well after using a similar approach to yours, I am so excited for her and the family. she has been an inspiration to me, sharing and passing on all the information she learns, this is how I came across your site.
You are of so much value Chris keep up the good work
    Respectfully Joanne

  28. Amy

Thank you so much for sharing your story. About 10 years ago, my cousin also had cancer – lymphoma – his had come when he was also in his young 20’s and would come ago. His aunt, being a major health food nut finally got him to come home from CA (he was then in his early 30’s and fighting his last battle, unable to care for himself well) and put him on this raw/organic/vegan diet. A tumor on his liver shrunk to about half it’s size. He subsequently gave up the diet and the tumor grew back to twice it’s original size. He lost his battle shortly after that.

Fast forward to today and my mother in law was just told that her breast cancer has returned to 2 small spots in her brain, a small spot in her rib, lung and liver. I want to tell her to do this but I don’t know how to convince a 70 year old woman who has smoked for 45 years to 1) quit smoking and 2) change her eating lifestyle. I completely believe that God’s natural design for our lives can make it possible. I would like her to be around for my children but need help convincing her this may help. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  29. Mary Montoya

I am a breast cancer survivor and you have been instrumental in my journey back to health.I too instinctively knew that drugs and radiation was not the answer. I still continue to juice every day. I love your blog and continue to stay tuned in. You do an amazing job at getting this life saving information out to those that need it most. God bless you for all that you’ve done to help others survive this horrible disease.

    1. khaoula

please @Mary Montoya what did you do to be breast cancer survivor
      what is (juice)

  30. Jenni

WOW! I am so happy for you! That was a great show! Was that your first time on national television? You really looked like a pro, Chris. God bless tenfold you for sharing your story.

I’ve just gotten tests back and after only three solid months of the ‘chrisbeatcancer diet’, all my tumor markers are well within the normal range. Yippee, I think. No one’s mentioning ‘cured’ or ‘remission’ yet, but I’m happy that I’m on the right track, even though I didn’t need any tests to tell me that, y’know?

One thing I’m wondering, what kind of testing did you do way back when to keep tabs on your progress? Do you still do those same tests? How often?

Thanks again for your fabulous story, your fantastic faith, and congrats on the show! You’re kind of a big deal! :)

PS: In person, when I tell anyone about your site (several times a week) they do a doubletake when I give them the URL for your site. Many people think I’m saying “Crispy Cancer dot com” Ha! Maybe I’m a little too giddy when I’m sharing, huh?

    Regards,
    Jenni

    1. Chris Wark

      Hi Jenni
Haha yeah, I’m “kind of a big deal”

So excited about your progress, don’t worry about the doctors, they won’t give you any credit for 5 years.
Keep keep doing what you are doing!

I had blood work done every month for the first couple years, then we eased up on it.
      Now just once per year.
Also a few CT scans along the way, I don’t do them now, too much radiation.

It’s funny, when I first started the site my buddy JP said the same thing, “It sounds like you’re saying crispy cancer”.
So now I make sure to say it slowly and enunciate the “t” in “beat” when I say chris beaT cancer. :)

  31. charlotte

will plants vegetablea and fruit help to fight off ms?

    1. barb

It’s worth a go, right? I have read some believe that ms could be result of poor nutrition/fungus. But, there is no KNOWN cause. Better nutrition does help your body and immune system to help fight off other problems. I would try no more sugar and bad grains in my diet for a few months. No corn products or soy, too. I do these types of “diets” every now and then just to reset my health. I must get back to rebounding, too

Good luck and good health to you ♥

  32. Jon

The other interviewee told the audience during the QnA that Aspirin is a natural blood thinner and a way to fight off the risk of getting a stroke!

NONESENS, indeed it is a blood thinner, but natural it certainly is not. My reply would have been, Omega 3, cause that is a natural blood thinner. In fact a cocktail of Omega 3 (as DHA/EPA Fatty acids) together with magnesium (preferably as magnesium L-Threonate) and pure niacin B3 would have been my answer to Ms. Lakes question regarding which supplements in particular would combat the risk of a stroke. Just saying. :-)

  33. J Moore

I was actually trying to find information on make overs for my beautiful daughter and her husband~ they’re fantastic ~ never had a honey moon~ Murphy’s law in effect and they’ve been married two years. He’s a fantastic step Dad to 4 and Papa~ 8 yrs younger than my daughter ~ then I see this ~ crying ad I viewed it. My husband died from an Astrocytoma~ very painful ~ he was an interesting “case” as Astrocytoma’s are not common. Thank you Ricki ~ this information will educate others for my experience with my husband is a horror story~ my respect for the medical profession diminished greatly and I worked in the nursing field~ please continue to educate . Your a blessing. Respectfully Janie Moore

  34. Sonja

Thank you Chris. You are a warrior, and people will follow. I have Mantle Cell Lymphoma and my cancer is shrinking. no treatment, except I do a Macrobiotic diet. And juicing. I am noticing a groundswell forming. People want other options and are fearful of the orthodox route. However, what this shows is that even if you go orthodox medicine, you need to change the everyday choices of what goes into your mouth. It all matters. Thank you, thank you for having the courage to get out there and wave your flag. there is another way. And Thank you to Ricki for having you on. that takes another kind of courage!

  35. Cathie

Chris, you are so cool. thank you. I really enjoy your mix of passion for God and nutrition. Following your website
