Fluoride: How A Toxic Poison Ended Up In Our Water Supply

Around 1945, local water treatment facilities began to add sodium fluoride to our water supply.

The first thing you should know is that the fluoride they put in our drinking water is not a pharmaceutical grade additive.

It is an industrial waste byproduct.

As aluminum production increased in the first half of the twentieth century, it became necessary to find somewhere to put the fluoride. Manufacturers could no longer dump it into rivers or landfills, because it was poisoning crops and making livestock sick. Francis Frary, chief scientist for ALCOA, had an idea. He commissioned Gerald Cox at the Mellon Institute, to conduct research regarding the benefits of adding fluoride to the water supply. The Mellon Institute was frequently hired by big business to produce research that supported their industries, and for several decades they produced research showing that asbestos was safe and did not cause cancer. Hmmm.

They also produced reports assuring everyone that fluoride was not toxic and would be beneficial to add to our drinking water for healthy teeth.

Another proponent of the safety of fluoride at that time was scientist Harold Hodge, who was later revealed to to have been part of the the Human Radiation Experiment; injecting test subjects with plutonium and uranium in 1945-46. This was documented by pulitzer prize winning reporter Eileen Welsonne in The Plutonium Files.

Hodge was also chief toxicologist of
The Manhattan Project and fluoride was a key component in the production of the atom bomb. His studies were conducted with a bias toward proving fluoride safe, which would protect the government and industry from lawsuits.

The “research science” done to support water fluoridation was underwritten by these massive companies:

Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA)
Aluminum Company of Canada

American Petroleum Institute
Dupont
Kaiser Aluminum
Reynolds Steel
US Steel
National Institute of Dental Research

Convincing the general public that we need to add fluoride to our water supply was one of the most sophisticated cons of all time. It created a multi-billion dollar industry and enabled manufacturers to sell this worthless toxic byproduct of aluminum to local municipalities for a profit.

PR master Edward Bernays also known as “The Father of Spin” created the PR campaign to sell fluoride to the nation as an additive “recommended by your doctor and dentist for healthy teeth”. He was a pioneer of modern propaganda and used the theories of mass psychology and persuasion to suit the needs of corporate and political organizations.

Bernays even created marketing campaigns for tobacco companies using the doctor and dentist endorsement, like the one on the right.

He even wrote a book called Propaganda and another one called Public Relations. For you trivia buffs, he was also Sigmund Freud’s nephew.

In 1950 the public health service endorsed water fluoridation and almost immediately there was a national movement against it led by Dr. George Walbott, who was also the first physician to warn against fatal allergic reactions to penicillin, and that smoking causes emphysema.

Walbott discovered that low dose fluoride was causing allergic reactions in some of his patients who displayed a variety of symptoms such as headaches, back pain, gastric problems, muscle fatigue, etc.

He conducted a series of double blind tests further proving his fluoride allergy theory, and published several papers about it.

Walbott was criticized and marginalized for his research and for speaking out against fluoride, tobacco, and penicillin, which is why you’ve never heard of him.

The main fluoride chemical added to water today is hydrofluorosilicic acid an industrial by-product from the phosphate fertilizer industry.

Fluoride given to rats has been proven to cause bone cancer, liver cancer, and a host of other physical ailments.

Dr. William Marcus, Senior Science Advisor to the EPA Office of Water, was fired because of his outspoken opposition to water fluoridation in the early 1990’s. He even claimed that they rigged their test results to show that fluoride did not cause cancer when in fact it did.

Researcher Dr. Phyllis Mullenix was asked to study fluoride and was surprised to find and prove that fluoride is a neurotoxin and causes effects like hyper activity, memory problems, and IQ problems similar to ADD/ADHD in laboratory rats. After submitting her findings, she was promptly fired from the Forsyth Dental Research Center. She went from being a leading neurotoxicologist at a Harvard affiliated research institute to an industry pariah. This assignment and her findings ruined her career as a grant-funded research scientist.

Not only does fluoride in water not help your teeth, too much of it causes permanent damage in young children’s teeth between 3 months and 8 years old. This is called dental fluorosis. Fluoride also accumulates in the bones eventually causing a bone disease called skeletal fluorosis in adults.

Welcome to Opposite Land where right is wrong, and up is down:

It is illegal to dump fluoride into our lakes and rivers, but it is perfectly fine to put in our drinking water and toothpaste.

Cities with fluoridated water have higher cavity rates and higher cancer death rates when compared to cities with unfluoridated water. As of 2010, 66% of US water supplies are currently fluoridated, but the good new is that since 1999 over 60 U.S. communities have rejected fluoridation.

Hidden sources of fluoride:  Most commercial crops are watered with fluoridated water. These crops absorb the fluoride. Fruit juices from concentrate are reconstituted with fluoridated water, and bottled water, even if it’s filtered, usually has fluoride in it.

Fluoride is still defended today for two reasons:  The massive profit produced by selling it to local municipalities, and the massive liability and lawsuits that would follow an admission that it is in fact toxic and harmful.

The Fluoride Deceptionis a book based on ten years of research by BBC reporter Christopher Bryson on the history and dangers of water fluoridation, and is some of the source material for this post. His research is so in-depth and well documented, it is virtually irrefutable.

There is also a ton of information and independent research from all over the world at www.FluorideAlert.org

Fluoride Film Fest!
Two great documentaries you can watch free online are An Inconvenient Tooth  (best name ever) and Fluoridegate.

Despite all the evidence, proponents of water fluoridation are still calling scientific research that shows fluoride to be toxic “conspiracy theories”, but the world is waking up.

Fun fact #1  98% of Western Europe has now rejected Water Fluoridation…
and their children’s teeth are just as healthy as children’s teeth in the US.

Fun fact #2  Since 1997 the FDA requires all fluoride toothpaste sold in the U.S. carry this warning:

WARNING: Keep out of reach of children under 6 years of age. If you accidentally swallow more than used for brushing, seek professional help or call a poison control center immediately.

This is because a tube of toothpaste contains enough fluoride to kill a small child, and most young children swallow some toothpaste while brushing. But even if you don’t swallow your toothpaste, unhealthy levels of fluoride are still absorbed sublingually through the capillaries under your tongue and go directly into your bloodstream.

Another interesting tidbit:  Bottled water companies are not required to disclose what type of filtration they use, if any. Don’t believe the “Natural Mountain Spring” hype, many of them are simply selling you tap water with fluoride in it.

Cooking with tap water
The main reason not to cook in tap water is that it concentrates the fluoride which then binds to the vegetables you’re about to eat.

Here’s some simple stuff we did to reduce our exposure to fluoride:

We bought a Waterwise Countertop Distiller in 2004. Distillers remove 99% of all contaminants including fluoride, chlorine, lead, bacteria and other toxins from your tap water; giving you pure, clean H2O. Pitcher and faucet mounted filters do not remove fluoride, neither do fridge water filters. It’s a simple process really. Water is boiled in the pitcher on the left, and the steam travels over and collects in the pitcher on the right. Voila!

(photo:chrisbeatcancer)

Wanna see the some of the crud the Waterwise has removed from our drinking water?
Here’s a picture I took of the inside of the stainless steel boiler in my distiller,

after a few months of use.

(photo:chrisbeatcancer)

Crazy pic right?  Looks kinda like a planet.

We used a Waterwise Countertop Distiller from 2004-2012.

Today we use a Berkey Water Filter, which removes hundreds of contaminants including fluoride and requires no power or water pressure.
Watch my video 5 Reasons Why I Love My Berkey Water Filter

Waterwise also makes a great shower filter called Showerwise that we use at our house.  Your body can absorb more chlorine through your lungs and skin in a 10 minute shower than from drinking 2 liters of the same water!  This is why we bought a shower filter.  It also reduces iron, lead, mercury, hydrogen sulfide, and inhibits fungal, bacterial and mildew growth.  The first time I used our filter I noticed that the shower steam actually smelled different. By “different” I mean the shower steam odor I was accustomed to, and thought was normal, was gone.  Pretty cool.

It comes with a massaging shower head that can be swapped out if you have one you prefer. The replaceable filter cartridge lasts 12-18 months.
Buy the Showerwise Shower Filter here

We stopped buying toothpaste that contains fluoride in 2004.

2016 Update: It’s been over 12 years of not drinking fluoridated water or brushing with fluoride toothpaste and our dental reports are always perfect. No cavities in our house. That’s because healthy teeth come from a diet rich in whole unprocessed foods from the earth, not from fluoride in toothpaste and drinking water.

Chris what do you think about filtered water? I don’t like the bottled kind anymore. Since I have been on chemo, my taste buds have differed big time. So now I use filtered water and sanitize the bottles with a little bleach and filtered water and drink from there when I go out.

    1. chrisbeatcancer

Just make sure the filter gets fluoride out, most don’t.
      :)

      1. Linda

I always wonder about those carbon filters though. The word carbon sounds scary. Thoughts please?

        1. chrisbeatcancer

          Hi Linda
I wouldn’t worry about the carbon filters.
Even my water distiller has one.
          :)

    2. calling all patriots

OK now that everybody knows the truth let me tell you why they are doing this. They must have learned during their initial trials that Fluoride levels in men decreased testosterone and increased cancer in women. Now this is going to sound crazy but if you look at the corporations and people who were involved you will see they are all part of a globalist scheme. Reynolds steel the Reynolds family is part of the 13 families of the Illuminati bloodline. Look it up. I’m sure the rest have their connections as well or were paid handsomely.
Now. If you were trying to globalize a nation that’s people were known for being revolutionaries. Wouldn’t it be easier to take control if they were docile first. It took years for the fluoride to sink in and really do its damage. Here is a study on fluoride on rabbits-

“Fluoride was orally administered to rabbits at 10 mg NaF/kg body weight for 18 or 29 months. The animals were then killed and and the structure of the testis, epididymis and vas deferens studied under light and scanning electron microscopes. In animals treated for 29 months, the spermatogenic cells in the seminiferous tubules were disrupted, degenerated and devoid of sperrnatozoa. In animals treated for 18 or 29 months, loss of cilia on the epithelial cells lining the lumen of the ductus efferentes of the caput epididymidis and of stereocilia on the epithelial cells lining the lumen of the vas deferens was observed.”

It is proven that fluoride kills testosterone levels in men. Now look at this information about the testosterone levels in men that have been studied since the 80s-

–Generational decline in testosterone levels observed–

“Trend does not seem to be attributable to health and lifestyle changes.”

      Endocrine Today, February 2007

“During the past two decades, testosterone levels in American men have rapidly declined.
This information comes from a long-term prospective study that evaluated changes in serum testosterone on a population-wide basis.”

Now with information I have provided I implore you to look at society today. There are more homosexual and transgender kids and teens than EVER before in history. More men now are feminine and passive. The average 40 year old male’s testosterone level today is comparable to a 50 year old in 1980. Do you think this is societal or hormonal? You decide.

      1. arcadia11

unfortunately, you are likely completely correct. thanks for having the courage
        to post it.

        cheers ~

    3. THeCure

Cannabis kills cancer! I wouldn’t be worried about fluoride when chemo is killing you quickly.

  2. MissAngee

PS. I didn’t know fluoridated water was bad for you! The city I live in just added fluoride to the water system. OMG!

  3. Jenn

Amazing and awful :p Knew it was bad but didn’t know it was that bad. I’m assuming the water in Memphis is fluoridated? They put all kinds of stuff in it. Sometimes there’s so much chlorine in it you can smell it when you run the water. Makes me wonder what they are having to “clean” out of the water, either that or who wasn’t paying attention and added too much? Chris do you know if there are any efforts here currently to get the issue on the ballot? It’s easy for me to get really discouraged on all these issues because you can’t make people care, and it seems easier to just buy a filter. Love that you’re blogging about this. It makes it so much easier to get the information to more and more people. You should consider writing a letter to the Flyer and Commercial Appeal. :)

    1. chrisbeatcancer

      Hi Jenn
If you think about all the miles of pipes water has to run through to get to your house it makes sense that they use chlorine to kill bacteria, etc.
The chlorine is not good for us, but it’s necessary. Out in the country you can drill a well and have fresh clean well water, but it’s not really possible in the city.
There are organizations trying to get fluoride removed from the water supply but I do not know if anyone is really pushing for it locally.
I’m all for removing it from the water supply, but we are still need filters or distillers to remove all the lead, bacteria, and other junk.
      :)

  4. Jennifer

Hi Chris, a few months ago I switched from the standard Crest/Colgate toothpastes to Trader Joe’s All Natural Anticavity Peppermint Toothpaste. I made the switch because it doesn’t contain sodium lauryl sulphate, artificial sweeteners and colors, and it’s affordable, unlike Tom’s of Maine. After reading your article, I’m now pondering switching to something without fluoride; however, since I was a child, I have always been prone to multiple cavities. As someone with no medical insurance, it makes me nervous to stop using something that I’ve been told my whole life would prevent cavities. It’s a shame people can’t just trust the “experts” and our government to put human lives above profits.

    1. chrisbeatcancer

      Hi Jennifer thanks for writing!
It is disheartening when you discover that most “health information” is written with big business interests in mind.
Cavities come from diet. In his book Nutrition and Physical Degeneration, Dentist Weston Price researched tribes all over the world
and his research showed that people who grow their own food have straight healthy teeth and people who eat processed food have crooked teeth and cavities.
Fluoride had nothing to do with it. Crazy right?
If it makes you feel better, I haven’t used fluoride toothpaste in nearly 7 years and no cavities.
My dentist raved about my teeth just a few weeks ago.
      :)
      Chris

      1. Russell Eberts

Those British people must be eating lots of processed food, since their teeth are so crooked.

Obviously, cavities come from diet. If you eat a lot of sugar, you’ll get cavities. Not exactly rocket science.

You can’t possibly believe that crooked teeth come from processed foods. Orthodontics like that have much more to do with genetics; I didn’t have an overbite and crooked bottom teeth when I was a kid because I was eating processed food, it was because I inherited my mother’s crooked teeth.

There is absolutely no relation between crooked as opposed to straight teeth and whether or not you have cavities.

  5. Melissa Jaynes

I stopped the fluoride toothpaste and got my distiller a little over a week ago. My diabetic husband says today that his blood-sugar levels have been so much better these past few days. I joking said I bet it is from me taking away the fluoride. Of course then I go and look it up and sure enough it was!! Fluoride is horrible for diabetics!!

    1. chrisbeatcancer

Whoah!!!! That’s awesome Melissa! Kick A.
      Thanks for posting this!

  6. Lynn

Thank you for you all of your research.

Such interesting discussions I’ve had with my dentist over the past few years since I had rapid decay post radiation to my neck back in ’07. She’s done her job well, I have faith, and I do mine. She uses her flouride treatments when I see her every few month (I’ve relented) and I use my non-flouride, non sls toothpaste when I don’t see her (daily). Gratefully, I’ve done well with the help of her restoration. And my check-ups continue to be good. I’ve decided it’s all my healthy foods and eating practices :)

We still haven’t come to an agreement about the plastic mouth guard she wants me to wear. I’m waiting on her response to my question.. what EXACTLY is that thing made of…?

    :)

  7. Tom

The first place fluoride was added to water supplies was in Germany by none other than Adolph Hitler, to make people more docile, think about that!!!

  8. Bill

Chris- I looked at the Waterwise shower filter link and found nothing about it removing fluoride. I thought only ro or distillers could remove fluoride?

    1. chrisbeatcancer

Hey Bill you’re right! Only distilling and reverse osmosis filters remove fluoride.

  9. NancyEvans

Wow, Chris, what a great blog!! I was doing research on fluoride to put in my blog and came upon your well researched article. You did an excellent job. So I’ll just direct everyone to your article. Look forward to reading your other articles. I totally believe in your methods and mission.

  10. Mia

Chris do you add minerals back into your distilled water or drink it plain?
    Thanks!

PS- for those who have been poisoned by Fluoride, Iodine removes fluoride from your body!

    1. chrisbeatcancer

      Hi Mia
Yes I usually put about seven shakes of celtic sea salt in the pitcher

  11. Kjersti Sundberg

I have heard people talk about distilling water, but I recently have been learning about alkaline/ionized water which produces different PH’s of water. What is your take on these systems? In my eyes it would make sense to not only eat an alkaline diet, but also compliment it with alkaline H20.

    1. chrisbeatcancer

      Hi Kjersti
Alkaline water is a newish trend that’s gaining some popularity.
I’ve read some pros and cons about it and haven’t been convinced either way if it’s a good thing or not.
      Chris

  12. t

Is there a way to measure the amount of fluoride in tap water at home ?
How does one know that the filtration system does in fact remove the fluoride ?

    Thanks

    1. chrisbeatcancer

There probably is but I’ve never done it. Your local municipality can tell you what the fluoride ppm in your drinking water is.
Most filters do not remove fluoride. You should contact the filter manufacturer to verify.

      1. tal

So, how does one know that the distiller actually removes the fluoride ?

        1. chrisbeatcancer

It is commonly known that distillation removes fluoride. You can google it.
          :)

      2. Kathleen

        Hi Everyone,
I am a 31 year non-toxic cancer survivor who just discovered Chris’s site. I’ve been practicing dentistry for 32 years. (I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer just before graduating from dental school.) I don’t belong to the ADA because I disagree with their primary mission of promoting the interests of private practice. Fluoride ion in water in the current recommended concentration of 1:2 million provides huge public health benefit by means of strengthening tooth enamel, thereby reducing the incidence of dental decay. We all know the hazards of the typical
American diet, especially what kids are allowed to eat by ignorant parents. American teeth ARE stronger than European teeth.
I do cook with filtered water, and I filter my bath and shower water to remove chlorine. I use Tom’s toothpaste for it’s relative purity of ingredients & recommend it to my patients. Fluoridated water ought not be demonized. Are those facts cited about aluminum industry by-product still true today? I’ll look into it.

        1. chrisbeatcancer

The main fluoride chemical added to water today is hydrofluorosilicic acid an industrial by-product from the phosphate fertilizer industry.

  13. C

Hi Chris. I checked out my city’s municipal water, and found that they didn’t ‘add’ fluoride to the water, but that there are somehow low levels of it anyway…
Think I should switch to distilled for cooking and drinking?

  14. Gina

Hey Chris, quick question on your water choice… why do you prefer a distiller? And what do you think about Alkaline Water / Kangan Water Machines? thanks!

    1. Gina

nevermind! I just saw you addressed these already!!! :) thanks!!

  15. Hermelinda

Thanks for a marvelous posting! I certainly enjoyed reading it, you will be a great author.
I will make certain to bookmark your blog and will often come back in the foreseeable future.
I want to encourage that you continue your great writing, have a nice holiday
    weekend!

    First off,
    you are the best,
    second you should know
distilled water is not the best
    i recommend reverse osmosis
    why?
because you can restructure the water and add minerals back by using Himalayan Salt which is the best, better than sea salt.
Put the water in a circular container, and use a spoon to create a vortex and just run a few laps to help restructure the water, dont forget to add some Himalayan salt which is pure compared to the salt from the sea!

the fact of the water is you are drinking demineralized water
from distilled to even reverse osmosis
    anyway give this a read
    http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2010/12/18/distilled-water-interview.aspx

okay so if you read that and checked the sources at the bottom of that link you know its no good,
reverse osmosis is the best bet unless you buy berkey black filters which are pretty good they do cut down quite a bit of fluoride im not sure how much w/e

you should also post links like this one from the World health organization
lots of research here against fluoride in tap water!
    http://www.who.int/water_sanitation_health/publications/fluoride_drinking_water_full.pdf

2nd link is to prove reverse osmosis is no good when its demineralized so you must add minerals back!
then you have the best water you can get
    or settle with berkey filters
and make your own DIY real cheap
    check this out on youtube

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYG_TLoI9O4

oh yea almost forgot WHO link for reverse osmosis water a.k.a Demineralized water which is what distilled water also does but has more drawbacks versus R/O water.
heres the link sorry its a very long post!

regarding ionized water systems, i have been to Kangen presentations. The equipment is very expensive (about $3,000) and the purported benefit is twofold:
1.PH adjustable so you can use high acidity for cleaning and high alkaline ( 7 or over) for drinking.
    2. negative ions.
I discovered my tap water is already a PH of 7, so i use a Brita filter to get rid of any nasty stuff and take mega hydrate supplement to get the benefit of negative ions. Much cheaper than buying the system

  18. Chares Weber

I would like to persuade you to start a petition to place a tax on water fluoridation in your state sufficient to pay for the diseases it causes similar to the one I started on moveon.org below.
    Sincerely, Charles Weber

    Move on.org petition http://petitions.moveon.org/sign/tax-fluoridation?source=c.url&r_by=5431462

    Hi,
Fluoride is a vicious poison that is alleged to prevent tooth decay, but which only works topically (see http://charles_w.tripod.com/fluoride.html ). I now must take thyroid pills for the rest of my life because of it, and my circadian rhythm disruption is pobably because of it. Dental costs are higher in fluoridated areas pobably because of the high cost of correcting fluoridosis.
So I created a petition to The North Carolina State House, The North Carolina State Senate, and Governor Pat McCrory, which says:
“Place a tax on fluoridated water sufficiently high as to pay for all medical costs for the diseases it causes, such as hypothyroid disease, Alzheimer’s disease, fluorosis, and weakened bones.”
Will you sign this petition? Click here:
    http://petitions.moveon.org/sign/tax-fluoridation?source=c.fwd.in&r_by=5431462
    Thanks!

So basically companies like Coca-Cola? I mean, they used to actually have cocaine in their drink, and nowadays they own popular energy drinks such as Monster, Full Throttle, Nos, and more. It’s all about the profit.
